Finance Processing Manager Susan Matthews Bacich talks about her growth as a leader and how her team makes her proud. 

What did you want to do when you left school?

I really wasn't sure what i wanted to do as a career until my mid 20’s, so I did a variety of things between leaving school and going to Uni at 27. I studied part time while working 3 jobs - all accounting related.

Tell us about your career to date.

I’ve worked in many industries - from Automotive Repairs, Building/Construction, Civil Engineering, Cold Storage, Meat Works and now the agriculture sector at Farmlands.

What led you to Farmlands? 

It all started with a 6-month fixed term contract and 10 years later I’m still here!

How have you grown in your time with us at Farmlands?

The Finance Processing Role is where I have experienced my biggest growth, not only as a person but also as a People leader.

Going from managing just yourself to leading a whole team, especially with the added challenge of relocating them and integrating new staff was both exciting and overwhelming at times. Changes in location and team dynamics created some unique challenges, but here we are now 5 years later a well-oiled machine of 25 amazing individuals who I am very proud of.

What are you most proud of and what do you most enjoy at Farmlands? 

The Finance Processing team are my greatest achievement and all of those who have been in this team that are now in other parts of the business. It is a great place to work and never a dull moment.

Sadly, my tenure with Farmlands is coming to an end with a move back to Australia on the cards in early June. But I have to say that without a doubt this is an amazing place to work, with some incredible people that I have had the privilege to work with.

What would your advice be for someone who's interested in a career in your area at Farmlands? 

Getting into this team isn't about your skill set - we teach you everything you need to know, and there is a lot to learn. You need to come in with an open and curious mind, but most importantly you need to fit with the current team, so always be yourself in interviews and always listen to the questions that are asked of you.
