Careers: Spotlight on Technical Training
From professional dance to roles in education, recruitment and HR, hear how Lauren Naylor came to join Farmlands as our Technical Training Lead.
What did you want to do career-wise when you left school?
From a young age, my passion was the arts, especially dance. After school, I dreamed of becoming a professional dancer, envisioning a career on stage and inspiring others. I aimed to teach dance, sharing the skills, discipline, and joy of movement. Although my path led me in new directions, the foundation of supporting and inspiring others remains the heart of what I do.
Tell us about your career to date.
My career has evolved from an early passion for dance into roles across education, recruitment, and HR. After graduating with first-class honours, I pursued professional dance, performing worldwide. I then transitioned to teaching in the UK. Moving to New Zealand over ten years ago, I pivoted to international recruitment within the tertiary education sector, eventually transitioning into HR and recruitment. My work with a global recruitment company honed my skills in leadership, people development, and sales, leading me into Learning & Development to train and lead sales training across New Zealand and ANZ. Each step has broadened my expertise and deepened my understanding of education, recruitment, and leadership.
What led you to Farmlands?
What drew me to Farmlands was its identity as a New Zealand-owned and operated Co-operative, deeply connected to the people who embody the spirit of our country. Our farmers and growers are at the core of New Zealand’s identity, and Farmlands is a place where I can contribute to that legacy. I wanted to be part of a team committed to supporting the communities and industries that make New Zealand unique. Being involved in this development gives me a sense of pride in where we live and helps strengthen the future.

What have been your key achievements / what are you most proud of at Farmlands?

I’ve managed and led nationwide horticulture internships, rolled out an enhanced Farmlands Agronomy programme, and provided tailored leadership training for our Field Sales and management teams. Partnering with field teams and key stakeholders has been incredibly rewarding, achieving outcomes that benefit the entire business.
